What do the quotes that follow have to do with my book, MY MOTHER’S HOUSE, A Memoir?
My mother’s and my story, like all our stories, exists in a larger context. Without understanding of that context, we cannot understand our own lives as we might. These quotes help illuminate that context: our larger story, as I see it.
Of the countless quotes available, I've selected those that are not widely known or used, or that I feel I can present in an unusual way, so as to elicit an ah-ha! I have grouped and sub-grouped these quotes so that they reflect and enhance each other.
I am fully responsible for the grouping, not the sources I quote.
As I find more such quotes, I’ll add them. If you
have any you’d like to share, please send them to me and if I think
they fit the picture I’m building – the myth, if you will – I will
happily add them.

“The only mythology that is valid today is the mythology of the planet ...” Joseph Campbell; THE POWER OF MYTH p. 22
“Now brotherhood in most of the myths I know of is confined to a bounded community... For example, the Ten Commandments say, ‘Thou shalt not kill.’ Then the next chapter says, ‘Go into Canaan and kill everybody in it.’ That is a bounded field. The myths of participation and love pertain only to the in-group, and the out-group is totally other.” Joseph Campbell; THE POWER OF MYTH p.22

"The
options before us are crystal clear. Down one road, the one we're now
on, lies a cascading series of oil and water wars, climate disasters
and ecological devastation. Down the other lies a turn toward peaceful
resolution of conflicts, energy conservation, efficiency and a clean
energy revolution, and social and economic justice. Another world is
possible, but for it to come about another US is necessary."
Ted Glick http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/091907O.shtml
"You
can have a President who has opposed the Iraq war from the beginning,
opposed every bill funding it, opposed the Patriot Act, supported
non-profit single-payer health care, or you can have a
President...who's tall." Dennis Kucinich, 9-26-07 Democratic debate
"We have found that all lifeforms in the galaxy are capable of superior development." James T. Kirk, in The Gamsters of Triskeleon, STAR TREK

"You can fool some of the people some of the time, and that's enough to make a decent living." W.C. Fields

When we speak we are afraid our words will not be heard or welcomed. But when we are silent, we are still afraid. So it is better to speak. Audre Lorde

“The hero can go forth of his own volition to accomplish the adventure, as did Theseus when he arrived in his father's city, Athens, and heard the horrible story of the Minotaur; or he may be carried or sent abroad by some benign or malignant agent, as was Odysseus, driven about the Mediterranean by the winds of the angered god, Poseidon. The adventure may begin as a mere blunder...” Joseph Campbell; HERO WITH A THOUSAND FACES, p. 58
“Never do anything important casually.” Carl Faber
An inch ahead, all is darkness. The Kan-ying-p'ien (The Book of Rewards and Punishments)

“Great spirits have always encountered violent opposition from mediocre minds.” Albert Einstein

“...wonder is every bit as important as knowledge in the attempt to understand ...” K.C. Cole; SYMPATHETIC VIBRATIONS, p. 37
“...at the
speed of light, time stands still, and the clock stops. A photon,
naturally, travels at the speed of light, and this means that for a
photon time has no meaning.” John Gribbon; IN SEARCH OF SCHRODINGER'S CAT, p. 190
"Jung...has
opened a view of personality that is no longer single-centered but
polycentric... We are no longer single beings in the images of a single
God, but are always constituted of multiple parts: impish child, her or
heroine, supervising authority, asocial psychopath, and so on... we
have come to realize that each of us is normally a flux of figures..." James Hilllman, RE-VISIONING PSYCHOLOGY, p. 24
"The universe is infinite in all directions, not only above us in the large but also below us in the small. If we start from our human scale of existence and explore the content of the universe further and further, we finally arrive, both in the large and in the small, at misty distances where first our senses and then even our concepts fail us." Emil Wiechert, quoted by Freeman Dyson, INFINITY IN ALL DIRECTIONS

Never give up - no matter what is going on; develop the heart. Too much energy in your country ( USA ) is spent on developing the mind instead of the heart. Develop the heart. Be compassionate not just to your friends, but to everyone. Be compassionate; work for peace in your heart and in the world. And I say again: never give up, no matter what is happening, no matter what is going on around you. Never give up. Tenzin Gyatso, XIV Dalai Lama
